Twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude struck Venezuela on June 24, devastating the northern coastal region. The coastal state of La Guaira, located north of Caracas, was decimated by the quakes, which occurred within a minute of each other. National Assembly head Jorge Rodríguez reported that the official death toll has risen to 5,119.
Government officials stated that 16,740 people were injured in the disaster, although most have already been discharged from hospitals. Structural damage was extensive, with 856 buildings reported as damaged and 190 collapsed completely.
To support recovery and reconstruction, Venezuela has accessed emergency funding from the International Monetary Fund. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced that the country tapped $346 million from the IMF to facilitate the rebuilding of the affected regions.
