EU Diplomats Visit Ukraine to Mark Bucha Massacre Anniversary

Top European diplomats visited Kyiv on Tuesday to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the atrocities committed in Bucha by Russian forces. The delegation, led by European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and comprised of several EU foreign ministers, arrived by train and was welcomed by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

The visit marks a renewed focus on Ukraine from the EU, as concerns grow regarding the fallout from the conflict in the Middle East and its potential to divert resources from Ukraine. Kallas emphasized the importance of accountability for those responsible for the killings in Bucha and elsewhere, warning that a lack of justice could lead to cycles of revenge.

Following the Russian occupation of Bucha in early 2022, Ukrainian troops discovered over 400 bodies of civilians. The EU officials reaffirmed their commitment to holding Russia accountable for its actions, including its highest political and military leadership. The visit also comes amid internal EU tensions, specifically Hungary blocking a proposed aid package for Ukraine.

Kallas stated that negotiations to end the war are currently stalled, and stressed the need for continued European support, noting that “nobody else does.” The delegation’s presence aims to demonstrate that justice for Russian atrocities is inevitable and to reassure Kyiv of ongoing European efforts.
