Over 1 million evacuated and flights canceled as Typhoon Dolphin hits China

meteorology natural disasters

Typhoon Dolphin, the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit China this year, made landfall on the country's eastern coast on Sunday evening, affecting Shanghai and other regions. Before hitting China, the storm swept through Japan's southern Okinawa prefecture, where it injured six people and cut power to more than 50,000 buildings.

The storm brought torrential rain and strong winds, with sustained speeds reaching 162 kilometers per hour, or 85 miles per hour at Force 13. In response, China's National Meteorological Centre issued a red typhoon alert, its most severe warning, as officials warned of the high risk of flooding and landslides.

The approach of the cyclone triggered mass evacuations and widespread transport disruptions across eastern China. More than one million people were moved to safety, and some rail services were suspended. Flight cancellations were extensive, with over 1,600 flights cancelled in total, including more than 1,300 at Shanghai's two airports.

Meteorological authorities expect the storm to continue into Monday before weakening and moving inland.
