Two passenger trains collided on Sunday in the al-Ayyat district of Giza province, south of Cairo. A train traveling toward the southwestern Fayoum province crashed into the rear of another train heading to the southern province of Aswan, resulting in one of the trains derailing and overturning carriages.
Authorities reported that at least four people were killed and nearly 90 others were injured, though some health officials stated the death toll was at least seven. Over 50 ambulances were deployed to the scene to assist the dozens of injured passengers.
President Abdelfatah al-Sisi has ordered a prompt investigation to determine the causes of the collision and establish responsibility. The President emphasized that anyone found negligent should be held accountable.
The accident is the latest in a history of deadly rail crashes in Egypt, where the railway system has faced issues with mismanagement and poor equipment maintenance. This occurs despite billions of dollars spent on modernization initiatives intended to improve the network.
