Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday to conclude a four-day visit to Washington. President Aoun is seeking U.S. support for his agenda, including diplomacy with Israel, to end the fighting and secure an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
During this high-stakes meeting, Aoun is expected to present a plan on how to disarm the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Disarming the group has been a key condition set by Israel before it withdraws from the lands its troops occupy in the south.
The meeting comes as Lebanon and Israel continue to hold rare direct talks mediated by Washington. Beirut has also announced the beginning of its mobilization to the southern Lebanese regions, following a U.S. announcement regarding the start of the implementation of an agreement granting the Lebanese army control over pilot zones in the south.
