A Seoul district court sentenced former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to two years in prison on Monday. He was found partially guilty of accepting illegal political funds in the form of free, manipulated opinion polls provided by a political broker.
The ruling concerns allegations that Yoon received these free services between 2021 and 2022. These polls were reportedly provided in exchange for his support of a candidate seeking his party's nomination in a parliamentary by-election and potentially aided his 2022 presidential bid.
This conviction adds to the significant legal challenges facing the ousted president, who is currently involved in eight legal cases. Yoon is also appealing a life sentence linked to charges of leading an insurrection following his martial law declaration in 2024.
