Democrat Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, has won a stunning upset in South Carolina’s US Senate race, defeating Republican incumbent Darline Graham. In doing so, Andrews has flipped the seat previously held by the late Republican powerbroker Lindsey Graham.
Darline Graham, the sister of the late Lindsey Graham, had been appointed to the seat following her brother's death. Andrews ran her campaign on healthcare affordability, facing an uphill battle in a state that has been seen as reliably Republican.
This victory marks a historic milestone, as Andrews is the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in South Carolina in 28 years. Her win ends a period of more than a quarter century without a Democrat representing the state in the Senate.
