More than half of Europe, including much of Germany, is facing a third wave of extreme heat this summer. As the planet’s fastest-warming continent, some areas are ill-equipped to handle the hot weather, which has significantly worsened drought conditions and wildfires across the region.
The most intense heat is expected across Western and Southern Europe, with France, Italy, and Spain among the hardest-hit countries. Temperatures are expected to surpass 30°C across large swaths of these areas, with some parts of France, Italy, and Spain seeing temperatures above 35°C. The Balkans and the United Kingdom are also sweltering.
Temperatures are set to soar as high as 109 degrees Fahrenheit (43 Celsius) this week. Due to these extreme conditions, Europeans and tourists say that summer in Europe has lost its appeal.
