An American diplomat assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar, has been found dead. The U.S. State Department confirmed the death of the government employee but declined to provide further details, citing the privacy of the family and loved ones.
According to members of the diplomatic community in Myanmar, the man was found dead approximately two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel. The facility, located about 1.5 kilometers from the American Embassy, is popular with business people, diplomats, and international visitors. Police are currently treating the case as a possible homicide and have a Thai woman in custody.
Authorities in Myanmar and representatives from Thailand have remained silent on the investigation. The Thai Embassy in Yangon and Thailand's Foreign Ministry refused to comment or confirm whether consular support has been provided to the suspect. Additionally, the manager of the Sakura hotel and local police have declined to provide information.
The incident occurs as Myanmar remains embroiled in fighting between the military-led government, which ousted the democratically elected leader in 2021, and various pro-democracy forces and ethnic minority militias.
