U.S. striker Patrick Agyemang will miss this summer’s World Cup after suffering a serious Achilles tendon injury while playing for Derby County. The injury occurred during Derby’s 2-0 victory over Stoke City on Monday, after Agyemang landed awkwardly while bringing down the ball.
Agyemang was visibly emotional as he was stretchered off the field with his right leg strapped. Derby County confirmed the injury on Tuesday, stating he would unfortunately miss the tournament being held in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Further tests are planned, but a recovery timeline has not been established.
The 25-year-old has been a key player for Derby, scoring a team-leading 10 goals since joining from Charlotte in Major League Soccer last summer. He recently represented the United States during the international break, scoring against Belgium and gaining playing time against Portugal.
