Roblox Implements Age-Gated Accounts Amid Safety & Legal Concerns

technology internet gaming

Roblox is introducing age-gated account tiers for its 144 million daily users, aiming to enhance online safety amid global scrutiny. The changes, rolling out mid-May, will create separate experiences based on age.

The platform will assign users aged 5 to 8 to “Roblox Kids” accounts and those aged 9 to 15 to “Roblox Select” accounts, alongside standard accounts for users 16 and older. This segregation will impact content and chat access.

This move follows lawsuits from eight US state attorneys general regarding child safety and builds upon a facial age verification system implemented earlier this year. Roblox is proactively addressing potential social media bans under consideration worldwide.
