At least 10 people were killed and 64 others injured when pyrotechnic material exploded during a patron saint festival in Temascalcingo, Mexico State. The blast occurred Saturday night next to the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church, causing a wall to collapse.
Hundreds of residents had gathered to watch the fireworks display as part of the religious festival. Video footage showed the blast occurring during a ritual involving a burning straw bull effigy fitted with fireworks. A local bishop reported that two priests are among the injured.
The municipality, located approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City, has a population of 66,000. The Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Pyrotechnic explosions are common in Mexico, where fireworks are frequently used in street celebrations and religious festivals.
