North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its eastern coast on Sunday. South Korea and Japan reported the launches, with the weapons believed to have fallen into the sea in waters outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
The launches are the second set of tests in roughly a week and follow the firing of multiple short-range ballistic missiles eight days prior, which Pyongyang described as part of a joint firepower drill. North Korea has accused the United States of driving tensions on the Korean Peninsula through a series of military drills.
The incidents occurred just hours after North Korea rejected a UN resolution calling for an end to its nuclear activities and asserted its absolute status as a nuclear-armed state. In August, President Donald Trump told reporters that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had 57 very powerful nuclear weapons.
These weapons demonstrations continue even after President Trump scaled back a joint military exercise with South Korea last month in an apparent effort to revive diplomacy with Kim Jong Un.
