FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed an independent external review on Monday of how the governing body makes major decisions. In a letter addressed to the FIFA council and all 211 member association presidents, Infantino suggested a review of the current governance framework for major strategic initiatives to recommend potential improvements.
The proposal follows criticism of Infantino's leadership, including backlash and calls for a boycott over the summer after he proposed selling a stake in the World Cup to private investors. Infantino acknowledged in his letter that the handling of this now-abandoned investment plan had caused concern.
Infantino also stated that he would propose consultations with confederations and member associations to strengthen the decision-making process. These efforts are intended to reform the governance of the world football governing body and clarify who has a say in major initiatives.
