President Donald Trump will travel to Beijing for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15. The visit, Trump’s first to China in eight years, was rescheduled from a planned trip delayed due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
The announcement follows a period of uncertainty regarding the meeting, initially postponed as Trump focused on the situation in Iran and pressed Beijing to assist with securing the Strait of Hormuz. Trump indicated the visit was “resetting” and that China was agreeable to the new dates.
Following the Beijing summit, President Xi Jinping will visit the United States for a reciprocal meeting with Trump later this year. The White House confirmed the planned visits, signaling an effort to maintain dialogue between the world’s largest economies.
