A coalition of 42 U.S. state attorneys general has launched a sweeping investigation into OpenAI. New York's attorney general served the company with a subpoena on Friday, demanding documents related to a wide range of its activities and their impact on users.
The subpoena seeks information on several areas, including advertising, user engagement and retention, and the company's handling of consumer and health data. Additionally, investigators are requesting details on internal company policies, deep learning models, and activities involving minors and seniors.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company works daily to bring the benefits of AI to people in a responsible and safe manner. The spokesperson added that OpenAI takes the concerns raised by state attorneys general seriously and intends to engage constructively with their offices.
This investigation follows reports that OpenAI has confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO. Sources suggest the offering could happen as early as September and could value the company at up to $1 trillion.
