Uganda has been declared Ebola-free after 42 days without new transmission. The country's final patient was discharged from hospital care on July 16, bringing an end to the outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain.
However, a World Health Organization official reported in a briefing on Wednesday that the virus is not under control in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. The DRC is currently battling the deadliest Ebola outbreak in its history, with cases continuing to rise.
The DR Congo has recorded more than 5,600 cases and over 2,700 deaths. The situation is particularly concerning as Uganda shares an 877-kilometre border with the affected nation.
According to people on the front lines, the response to the raging epidemic in Congo has been hampered by pervasive misinformation and a severe lack of funding.
