California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell’s campaign is facing significant turmoil following allegations of sexual misconduct. Several staffers have resigned and prominent political leaders are withdrawing their support.
The allegations include accounts of sexual assault, with one woman detailing two separate incidents in reports published by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN. A former staffer also claims she was raped, and multiple reports detail allegations of unwanted advances toward women.
Key financial backers have suspended support, and fellow Democrats, including Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff, are calling on Swalwell to suspend his campaign. Two congressmen who chaired his campaign and two senators who endorsed his bid have also withdrawn their support.
Swalwell has denied the allegations, calling them “flat false.”
