New York's City Council voted Thursday to ban horse-drawn carriage rides in the city. The measure, which targets a tourist attraction in Central Park, is set to go into effect starting in June 2028.

The governing body passed the bill with a 40 to 7 vote. Known as Romanch's Law, the measure is now expected to be signed into law by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The decision follows years of debate over animal welfare, public safety, and the place of horses on city streets. The tourist staple, which dates back to the 19th century, has faced increasing scrutiny, particularly following the death of a teenage tourist last spring.
