US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Christian Castro is facing criminal charges in Minnesota for assault and falsely reporting a crime. Castro is accused of firing his gun through a house door and striking 24-year-old Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg during an immigration raid known as Operation Metro Surge in north Minneapolis last winter. He is further accused of lying under oath to justify the shooting.
Castro is currently caught in an interstate extradition dispute between Texas and Minnesota while held in a South Texas jail. A federal judge on Wednesday denied a request by Minnesota for a temporary restraining order to halt Castro's release or compel Texas Governor Greg Abbott to sign an extradition warrant.
Minnesota officials expressed concern that Castro could flee to Mexico. This fear is based on calls he made from jail to a woman in Mexico, during which he reportedly discussed marrying her and purchasing a house in Mexico upon his release.
