Pope Leo XIV confirms Latin America trip after lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV will proceed with his planned visit to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17. The Vatican announced on Monday that the Pope is fit enough to make the journey, indicating that his recovery from lung cancer surgery is on track.

The decision follows surgery on October 13 to treat lung cancer, during which part of one lung was removed. While the Pope weighed whether to press ahead with the tour just 24 days after the operation, doctors have ruled out any complications that could derail the trip.

This journey to Latin America will be the longest of his pontificate yet. Despite the tour being described as particularly grueling, the visit will go ahead as planned.

For Pope Leo, there was little choice but to go to Latin America
