Senegal Stripped of AFCON Title, Morocco Crowned Champions
Morocco has been awarded the Africa Cup of Nations title after an appeals board overturned Senegal’s 1-0 victory from the January final. The Confederation of African Football ruled Senegal “forfeited the final” due to players and the head coach leaving the field for 15 minutes in protest over a late penalty decision. The ruling changes the result to a 3-0 default win for host nation Morocco. The initial match saw Brahim Diaz’s penalty saved before Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in extra time. Following the game, both Senegal and Morocco faced fines and bans in initial disciplinary hearings, but the result stood. Senegal’s Football Federation has strongly criticized the decision as “unfair” and a “travesty,” vowing to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The federation stated the ruling “discredits African football” and reaffirmed its commitment to sporting justice. The case may proceed to further appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, a process expected to take approximately a year.
