SoftBank profit beats expectations via chip bets despite overall drop

business company performance stock market investments

SoftBank Group Corp. reported a net income of ¥347.3 billion for its fiscal first quarter. While this represents an 18% drop in profit, the result beat market expectations, which had estimated a profit of about ¥166 billion.

The decline in profit was attributed to higher costs that offset investment gains. However, the company experienced a smaller-than-expected decline aided by a rally in its chip-stock holdings. Additionally, the investor is awaiting further gains from its bets on OpenAI.

The Tokyo-based technology investor typically sees fluctuating results because it invests in an array of companies through its Vision Fund, which banks heavily on fledgling technology.
