A former student opened fire at a high school in southeastern Turkey on Tuesday, wounding at least 16 people before killing himself. The 18-year-old attacker, armed with a shotgun, fired randomly at a vocational high school in Siverek, Sanliurfa province, and then hid inside the building.
The attack wounded 10 students, four teachers, a canteen employee, and a police officer. Five of the wounded were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital due to the severity of their conditions. Police deployed special operations units and cornered the assailant, who then took his own life with the same weapon.
Authorities are investigating the motive for the shooting, which is currently unclear. Local media reports indicate the attacker was a former student who used a hunting rifle.
School shootings are rare in Turkey, and a comprehensive investigation into the incident has been launched. Video footage showed students fleeing the school as the event unfolded.
