A shooting in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges borough left three people dead on Monday. The victims include a male police officer, an unidentified resident, and the suspected shooter. A female police officer was also seriously wounded during the incident.
Police report that the suspect, armed with a long gun, opened fire at a hotel. Officers returned fire, neutralizing the attacker immediately. The gun battle prompted a citywide shelter-in-place alert.
The bloodshed occurred in a partly Jewish neighborhood characterized by its kosher markets and restaurants, though the motive for the attack remains unknown. Police Chief Fady Dagher noted that this is the first time in 24 years a Montreal police officer has been killed while on duty.
