Russian eighth seed Mirra Andreeva won the French Open on Saturday, defeating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3 6-2 to capture her maiden Grand Slam title. The victory took place on a blustery Court Philippe Chatrier in Paris, where the 114th-ranked Chwalinska was denied a fairytale victory.
The 19-year-old Andreeva became the first teenager to win the Roland Garros crown since Pole Iga Swiatek in 2020 and the youngest French Open champion in over three decades. She is also the first Russian woman to win a Grand Slam since Maria Sharapova won the French Open in 2014.
Following the straight-sets win, Andreeva praised her tricky opponent and thanked herself. By claiming the title, the eighth-ranked player fulfilled her huge potential.
