Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maine, is facing increasing pressure to withdraw from the race following allegations of sexual assault. A growing list of Democratic party members have called on Platner to stand down.
In response to the allegations, top Democrats and close allies have rescinded their endorsements and cut off funding, calling for him to exit the race.
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a longtime backer of Platner, joined the calls on Tuesday. Sanders stated that he spoke with Platner and recommended that he step aside in light of the very serious allegations.
Platner has denied the claims, which were first reported on Monday.
