The United States and Iran have engaged in an escalating cycle of retaliation, with the US launching airstrikes against Iran for ten consecutive nights. US military operations have targeted Iranian military command centers, air defense systems, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone launch sites. In response, Iran has declared it is at full scale war, launching attacks on US military assets in Bahrain and Kuwait, as well as an enemy command center in Syria.
The intensification of fighting follows the deaths of three US service members in Iraq and Jordan, bringing the total number of US troop fatalities in the conflict to 17. One service member was killed in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone. President Donald Trump stated that the US is hitting Iran very hard to honor those killed, vowing that Iran will pay for the casualties.
The conflict has severely disrupted global energy markets, with Brent crude oil climbing above $90 a barrel as shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz largely stalled. Iran has targeted tankers in the strait, forcing crews to abandon ships. Meanwhile, the Houthi militant group in Yemen has threatened shipping in the Red Sea and declared its intention to blockade Saudi Arabian ports.
Diplomatic efforts to end the violence have struggled after a preliminary interim deal and memorandum of understanding regarding the Strait of Hormuz collapsed. While Iranian MPs have called for ground attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain, some signs of de-escalation remain. Regional mediators have proposed a 10-day ceasefire, and Iran's interior minister has traveled to Pakistan for talks to find a political settlement.
