All inward and outward flights at Catania airport in Sicily have been halted due to ongoing volcanic activity from nearby Mount Etna. The airport will remain closed until early Saturday.
An expert stated that while Etna erupts often, it usually does not release this much ash.
The volcanic activity has disrupted the plans of tens of thousands of travelers over the past week, with hundreds of flights forced to be canceled or rerouted.
