A massive luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of Donald Trump, is facing intense resistance in Albania. The 4 billion euro ($4.6 billion) venture, which spans an abandoned island and a stretch of seafront on the southern coast, has sparked widespread protests and environmental concerns as the country advances toward EU membership.
For three consecutive days, thousands of demonstrators have marched in the capital city of Tirana. Some protesters brandished inflatable flamingos to highlight feared environmental damage to a national marine park. Opponents have rejected an offer from Prime Minister Edi Rama to discuss solutions, with mounting calls for the project to be blocked.
Environmentalists argue that the development would impact several hundred hectares of pristine beaches and harm a protected environment. Meanwhile, critics have raised concerns regarding corruption and the use of coastal land. Prime Minister Rama insists the project will bring investment and jobs, claiming it will transform the nation and create wealth through a tourism boom.
