UAE says Omani FlyDubai co-pilot used crash axe in attempted terrorist attack

crime & law terrorism

A co-pilot on Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv attempted to carry out a terrorist attack by attacking the captain with a crash axe. The UAE prosecutor general stated the co-pilot tried to take control of the aircraft, sending the plane into a sharp plunge.

There were 182 people on board during the incident. Passengers and crew intervened to subdue the co-pilot and stabilize the plane, which eventually resulted in a safe landing.

The suspect has been identified as Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani national. He was reportedly barred from flying in Oman due to security concerns and extremist views.

The UAE prosecutor general is currently conducting a probe to determine the motive and all circumstances surrounding the event. The Emirati attorney general noted that the attacker likely did not need to smuggle a weapon on board, as he used the plane's emergency axe.
