A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday temporarily paused a lower court ruling that had declared the Trump administration's 10% global tariff unlawful. This decision keeps the tariffs in place for three importers who had won a reprieve from the duties last week.
The move follows a request made by the administration on Monday to pause the ruling while the federal government pursues an appeal. Judges are currently weighing the administration's request to allow officials to continue collecting the levies under Section 122 of the Trade Act while the legal fight is ongoing.
A coalition of 24 states has argued that these latest tariffs do not meet the standards of the 1974 Trade Act. Despite the legal challenges, more than 170,000 importers have paid deposits to cover the new tariffs since February.
