A catamaran-style ferry carrying nearly 270 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus on Sunday. The vessel was traveling from the port of Kyrenia, also known as Girne, to the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province.
The ship reportedly began taking in water a few kilometers off the coast before overturning. On board were 259 passengers and eight crew members. Video footage from the scene shows passengers wearing life jackets floating in the water and sitting on the overturned ship while waiting for rescue.
Rescue crews were dispatched to the scene to conduct a rescue operation. While many of those on board were rescued, authorities report that at least six people have died. Some of the survivors have been taken to the hospital.
