Leaders at the Group of Seven summit in France have expressed support for a tentative agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran. Washington and Tehran announced a Memorandum of Understanding over the weekend aimed at ending the U.S.-Israel-led war in Iran, which has decimated Trump's domestic standing and rocked the global economy. The preliminary agreement focuses on opening the Strait of Hormuz and further extending a shaky ceasefire.
G7 leaders described the agreement as a breakthrough secured under the president's strong leadership and stated they are ready to contribute. President Trump hailed the vote for the MOU and suggested that the next stage of negotiations should be easier than the first. However, he cautioned that the agreement is not yet final and called for a strong follow-up agreement.
Despite the support, the agreement remains uncertain as neither the White House nor Iran has released the actual text. Trump has defended the interim agreement while facing criticism, including from allies, due to a lack of specificity regarding its implementation. As the summit meetings conclude, a news conference is expected to address the uncertainty of the deal as well as U.S. support for Ukraine.
