A Russian court has sentenced Lev Shlosberg, a prominent opposition politician and senior member of the liberal Yabloko party, to 11 years and one month in a penal colony for criticizing the war in Ukraine.

Shlosberg was charged over his participation in an online debate about the conflict as well as for sharing critical articles. During his trial, he repeatedly called for a ceasefire and described the invasion as a catastrophe for Russia.

The conviction comes as part of a broader crackdown on dissent ahead of next month's parliamentary election. Addressing the court, Shlosberg stated, "A single person is imprisoned, yet fear seeps into the hearts of millions."
