Catastrophic flooding has swept across parts of Texas following days of heavy rain, submerging homes and roads. Two people have died in the hill country after floodwaters swept them away in their vehicles. Emergency responders are working around the clock, performing hundreds of rescues as floodwaters continue to threaten communities.
Governor Greg Abbott stated on Thursday afternoon that the state is bracing for record-shattering rainfall over the next 24 hours. The National Weather Service reported that a large wave barreled down a river on Thursday, the same one wrecked by flash floods last summer.
These floods hit the region just one year after a devastating flood killed between 135 and 137 people, including two dozen children and counselors at Camp Mystic. Officials are working to prevent a repeat of that tragedy and have used the current floods to test new warning systems.
While cleanup efforts have begun in hard-hit areas, parts of Texas remain under threat for dangerous flash flooding.
