China cemented its lead on the medal table during the second day of competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The nation dominated the first day of swimming at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, winning six of the seven finals, including a gold medal for defending Olympic champion Pan Zhanle.
Thirteen-year-old swimmer Yu Zidi, who turns 14 next month, has emerged as a teen phenomenon during the event. Yu took gold in the women's 200m butterfly with a record time of 2min 05.08sec after breezing through her qualifying heat.
Yu secured her second gold medal in the women's 200m individual medley, finishing in 2min 06.10sec. The time set a new Asian and Games record, coming in 0.72sec faster than the previous Asian Games record.
This success follows Yu's history as the youngest swimming world championships medalist in history, a milestone she achieved last year by winning bronze at age 12 as part of China's 4x200-meter freestyle relay team.
