Bank of England holds interest rates at 3.75% as inflation fears mount

The Bank of England held its benchmark interest rate steady at 3.75 per cent on July 30, marking the fifth time this year that rates have remained unchanged. The decision, which aligned with economists' expectations, was reached through a six-to-three vote by the monetary policy committee.

The decision comes as policymakers seek to balance signs that domestic price pressures are easing more quickly than predicted. A bigger-than-expected drop in the inflation rate last month provided the bank with breathing space to assess current economic conditions, despite a fall in inflation during June.

However, renewed fighting and resurgent tensions between the US and Iran have clouded the outlook. Bank officials warned that the conflict in the Middle East could keep oil prices high for longer than expected, with prices already climbing back above $90 a barrel.

Central bankers believe this volatility is the primary threat to the UK's inflationary trajectory. There are concerns that a further escalation in the Iran war could drive inflation above 4% next year, potentially increasing cost of living pressures for households.
