Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel kill five on Mexico's Pacific coast

humanitarian crisis meteorology natural disasters

Hurricane Simon, a Category 3 storm, has pummelled Mexico's Pacific coast, moving slowly and northwest parallel to the west-central coastline. The storm brought dangerous winds and heavy rainfall to vulnerable towns and resorts, capping a Pacific season of record-breaking intensity that has seen deadly storms stretch from Hawaii to Mexico.

At least five people have died due to the combined impact of Hurricane Simon and post-tropical cyclone Rachel. In the state of Guerrero, a 71-year-old man died in Chilpancingo when a wall collapsed. In Baja California, four people died and some remain missing following the impact of Rachel.

The storms caused widespread havoc, including flash flooding that inundated homes and blocked roads. Trees and electricity poles were downed as riverside communities were placed on alert for possible evacuations. Security forces utilized helicopters to rescue dozens of people as the weather systems damaged critical infrastructure.
