British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty in a London court of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. The verdict follows a four-week trial involving allegations by six women. Brand, 51, was convicted of four sexual offences involving four women occurring between 2005 and 2009. He was acquitted of two other counts of rape and one charge of attempted indecent assault.
Prosecutors described Brand as a ruthless, calculating, and manipulative sexual predator. The convictions involve crimes committed in various locations, including a radio station, the set of a DVD recording, a hotel room, a bar toilet, and Brand's luxury London townhouse. It was alleged that he sexually assaulted women in front of his entourage at their workplaces, including at a TV studio.
Brand denied the charges, testifying that while he was obsessed with sex and led a promiscuous life as a young man, he never forced anyone to do something against their will. Despite this, a judge stated that Brand faces a significant custodial term and a lengthy prison sentence. Sentencing is scheduled for Monday, and it has been reported that Brand faces further rape allegations.
